Elizabeth Devine Consulting Producer

Elizabeth Devine was born in Berkeley, California.  She graduated from UCLA in 1983 with a B.A. in Biology, and received her Masters degree in Criminalistics from California State University, Los Angeles in 1985.

While she was in graduate school, Devine began a two-year internship at the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. Directly out of school, she joined the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) as a criminalist in Narcotics.

In 1986, Devine transferred to Serology, and that same year she became a crime scene investigator, beginning a career that soon had her working on some of L.A. County’s highest profile murder investigations – model Linda Sobek, racing great Mickey Thompson, and the Menendez Brothers.  For her work on the Universal Citywalk murder case, Devine received the department’s Meritorious Service Medal.

At then Attorney General Janet Reno’s request, a national panel of experts was convened to establish national guidelines for crime scene investigation.  As a member of that panel,

which was sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Devine contributed to the publication of a booklet that has become the bible for crime scene investigations nationwide-- Crime Scene Investigation: A Guide for Law Enforcement.

In 1998, Devine was promoted to Supervising Criminalist, in charge of the Narcotics section before heading up the CSI program and co-supervising the lab’s DNA unit.

In addition, Devine provided training to LAPD, LASD, and Department of Justice in homicide investigation, sexual assault investigation and crime scene reconstruction.  She also taught at the Sheriff’s Academy and Patrol School for 10 years, training deputies for fieldwork.

After 15 years with the LASD, Devine retired as their most experienced CSI and their leading crime scene reconstruction expert.

In July of 2000, she joined the production staff of CSI as a technical consultant. In the first season of the hit drama, Devine received story credit on two of the highest-rated episodes of the year, and wrote a third, all based on real-life murder cases – “Blood Drops” (for which she was a co-nominee for a Writers Guild Award),  “Table Stakes,” and “Too Tough to Die.” She has been named co-producer for CSI’s 2002-2003 season, and oversees the technical consultants on both CSI and CSI: Miami.  Devine is also a consulting producer for the CSI spin-off, CSI: Miami and has written several episodes for the series.

She has also served as technical advisor on the feature films Jennifer 8, Ricochet, and the television movie-of-the-week Innocent Victim.

Devine lives with her three children, Austin, 8; Katherine, 6 and Rachel, 4, in La Canada, CA.
