CSI: Miami
Season 2 -
Episode 9 - Bait
Teleplay by Steven Maeda & Shane Brennan
Directed by Deran Sarafian
On a beautiful day out in Biscayne Bay, four stockbrokers set out for a
day of fishing. As they pull away from the dock, they notice a young
woman in club clothes adrift on a buoy. Before they even have a chance
to react, the woman is suddenly dragged under. As she bobs back to the
surface, panicked – a dorsal fin appears in the water, circling and
hungry. As the men try to swing around, a six-foot bull shark rises up
out of the water and pulls her completely under.
Horatio arrives on scene to find Alexx and Yelina already standing over
the remains of the victim. He finds the shark’s presence in the marina
unusual and asks Alexx to check her for a prior wound – something that
might leak blood and draw the predator. The body is flipped over, and
Alexx immediately finds a bullet hole on her torso. Back at the lab,
Alexx starts her work on the body, where she quickly uncovers evidence
of sexual assault. The shark may have finished the job, but the woman
ran into a human predator first.
As the dive crews comb the scene, Speedle discovers a high-end spygear
microphone on the body. They check with all the federal agencies to see
if anyone is missing an agent, but turn up nothing. Finally they check
with the microphone’s manufacturer, and are able to trace it back to
Bruno Gomes, a Miami based private investigator. Speedle brings in
Gomes, who explains that the victim, Cindy Castiano worked for him –
luring married men into confirming suspicions of infidelity. Castiano
was one of Gomes best “bait girls”, racking up an impressive number of
temporary restraining orders – which translates to an equally impressive
list of suspects.
Castiano’s car turns up in the parking garage of the Hotel Lapidus with
a broken windshield and the word “Bitch” painted across the chassis.
Fortunately the vandal was careless enough to leave behind a partial
print in the paint.
Knowing that the range of Castiano’s microphone is a little over a
hundred feet, they check the room directly under the rooftop bar, where
they discover their primary crime scene. The room is trashed, with blood
traces everywhere. They find Castiano’s keycard and tape recorder still
present – but the surveillance reels are nowhere to be found.
Closer examination reveals a small chunk of tape caught in the gears of
the recorder. Calleigh returns to the labs to see if they can
reconstruct the killer’s voice.
As Yelina and Horatio start canvassing the T.R.O. list, Delko gets to
work on the prints found on the keycard. Working with fingerprint
technician Joseph Kayle, they feed their partial into the system and
quickly turn up a match – CSI colleague Detective Frank Tripp – who was
previously under investigation by Gomes’ firm.
Now Delko must keep his suspicions from Horatio, and carry out his own
investigation before a line is forever drawn between the CSIs and the
cops who stand by their side.
