Teleplay by Charles Holland
Directed by Steven DePaul

Wealthy and beautiful, Morgan and Kay Coleman depart Miami’s Ritzy Shore Club restaurant. At Morgan’s request, Kay takes the keys from the valet and drives the Jaguar away from the driveway. Almost immediately, Enrique the valet hears shouts of a struggle coming from the car as it pulls away and summons the police.

At the scene of an accident, Morgan is treated for a forehead injury, while Horatio and Alexx examine Kay’s lifeless body which has been moved up an embankment from the rocks where it seems to have been thrown by the impact of the wreck. Kay also has a gunshot would to the head. Horatio carries the bad news to Morgan, who informs Caine that the carjacker took his wallet then hit him with a gun, knocking him out prior to the wreck.

Calleigh and Ryan examine the car and discover both Morgan’s wallet, full of cash, and Kay’s purse with a twenty and a vial of liquid it in. What they don’t find is blood spatter from Kay’s head wound, yet they do find blood spatter on the rocks below where the wreck happened, indicating that the shooting happened after impact, and outside the car. Inconsistencies in Morgan’s emerging behavior lead Horatio to investigate his background, including the family business, Coleman Shutters. He puts Yelina on that assignment.

In the autopsy theater, Alexx works on the body of a young man while lecturing a group of young people in an alcohol treatment program. One of the visitors, Derek Roddison, remains behind and asks her for a job. She agrees … on a temporary basis. Derek is initiated when a 16 year-old gang-banger arrives, shot full of holes. It is a “sobering” and fascinating experience for him; she is pleased, and sends him on to work on the next case with Dr. Glenn Monroe, who is a bit miffed that he didn’t okay the new hire first.

Examining the Colemans’ Jaguar further, Eric and Calleigh learn that Morgan’s head wound was from impact with the rearview mirror, not from a gun butt. DNA recovery from the backseat belongs to a convicted carjacking felon named Victor Tinocco, whom Horatio and Calleigh discover dead in his apartment, lying in a pool of blood in front of the open refrigerator. A “to-do” murder assignment note at the scene of this second crime carries the watermark of Coleman Shutters.

At Coleman Shutters, Horatio and Yelina meet Morgan’s brothers, Freddy and Sal, also partners in the family business. They have a warrant for every laser printer in the company to determine which one printed Kay’s murder instructions. Furthermore, Horatio’s suspicion of Morgan Coleman is now fueled by discovery of a lawsuit against Coleman Shutters, which the death of Coleman’s heavily insured wife could help out significantly, financially speaking.

Lab testing confirms that Freddy Coleman’s printer produced the instructions for Kay’s murder. When confronted by Horatio, Freddy takes the Fifth. The vial from Kay’s purse turns out to be fertility drugs, yet Alexx removed a diaphragm during autopsy, indicating that she was trying to get pregnant by one man, but not by another. Tyler runs a financial check on Kay and discovers massive credit card debts to online casinos as well as bank withdrawals just under, but never exceeding $10,000, the amount which would be flagged by the feds. Large deposits from a company called Burlington Reproductive confirm that Kay was selling her eggs to pay off her extensive, and secret, gambling debts.

Alexx is checking in a new body, whose listed personal effects include a flask which she cannot locate. Upon learning that her new guy, Derek, processed the body, Alexx immediately calls on Calleigh to conduct an internal investigation, already dreading the outcome. Alexx spots Derek and confronts him, accusing him of the theft. He denies it, but she doesn’t buy it. Soon after, Foster gives the flask to Calleigh, explaining that he “found it” in the men’s locker room.

Having found Coleman DNA on a cigarette lighter found in Kay’s purse, Horatio asks Sal and Freddy for DNA samples. Freddy admits the lighter is his and that he and Kay used to get together to talk. Horatio provides evidence that Freddy had been helping Kay with her gambling debts. Yelina appears with a warrant for all shutters manufactured at Coleman Shutters.

Calleigh has completed fingerprint testing on the flask, revealing not only Foster’s prints, but also those of Glenn Monroe. Alexx confronts Monroe, appalled at his behavior. He is unremorseful, even matter-of-fact about his alcoholism, but Alexx is steadfast in her resolve that either he or she reports his theft and sickness to the CME, and that he get help. Later, Alex apologizes to Derek, who is packing his things.

Testing of the shutters reveals use of inferior materials. Freddy admits that he was subbing the cheaper materials to skim money in order to help Kay pay off her debts, time and time again. Freddy tells Horatio that one of the company secretaries, Julie, learned that Kay was selling her eggs and had threatened to tell Morgan. Yelina questions Julie, who says that she initiated Sal’s conference call – his alibi – on the day Kay was killed. Her cell phone bill, however, indicates that the cell phone was located near the restaurant where Morgan and Kay had lunch. Julie then says that Sal took her cell phone, saying that he needed to be in the field that day. The team is at a loss to prove whether it was Julie or Sal near the scene of the crime.

Remembering the oil-like substance found on the bullet lodged in the hit man’s freezer, Calleigh suggests that they check for splatter of the same substance on their suspects’ clothing. Sal’s shirt, though having been dry cleaned, has retained some of the unique fluid, placing him at Victor’s murder scene. Morgan’s blood on the tip of Sal’s tie also places him at Kay’s murder scene. Sal soon admits to Kay’s murder, saying she deserved it for selling “future Coleman children.” Horatio tells him he’ll be facing charges for two murders and one conspiracy to commit.

At the autopsy loading dock, Alexx is there to receive incoming bodies, one a victim of the other, a drunk driver. She peers at the first, a young female in her twenties. The second body sends a wave of shocked recognition over her face … it’s Dr. Glenn Monroe. Once again, Alexx faces a young Alcoholic Treatment Group, this time revealing the smashed and mangled corpse of her former colleague as she lectures.
